Napier Clarke Architects were appointed by Faithful & Gould and Wycombe District Council in March 2016 to provide a feasibility study for Saunderton Lodge, Saunderton, Buckinghamshire.
Saunderton Lodge, originally a TB sanatorium and now a family hostel is owned and managed by the Wycombe District Council and provides the principal source of supported temporary self-contained accommodation for homeless adults and their dependent children combine.
Saunderton lodge was never designed to be a family hostel and therefore the layout and room sizes have never been adequate for the requirements of the families residing at the hostel. Its sporadic sprawl across the site is a result of several extensions over the years and this has led to a building that lacks strategic space planning and accessibility.
The site is located in an isolated position, high up on the hill with wonderful South facing views down the valley, the existing building is in a state of disrepair and is in urgent need of renovation or redevelopment.
The purpose of this feasibility report was twofold, one to prepare design proposals for possible extensions and refurbishment. Two, to prepare design proposals for a completely new family hostel bringing it into the 21st Century and potentially setting new standards for family hostel design.
